Major pieces of the puzzle of that life are ommited / ignored, however. Only one episode of Stalin as an armed robbery is conveyed to the reader. His life in Baku as an extortionate / party fundraiser is missing. He had another alias, Koba, during that time and his first marriage yet before adopting the Stalin name. Afterall, Koba was the name given to him by nonother than Lenin himself! How about the great purges of the party and the Red Army before WWII? The Stalin-contrived famine in Ukraine? The 1939-1940 war he almost lost to Finland because of his Red Army purges? The FACT that he and his polices caused the deaths of more people than Adolph Hitler? That he may or may not have killed his 2nd wife, Nadezhda Alliluyeva in 1932? She gets no mention in this book, nor do her two children, Svetlana and Vasily. Only the fact of the birth of Yakov Dzhugashvili, his son and eldest child, by his supposedly greatest love, Ketevan Svanidze, is mentioned. Nothing written that Two of was disowned after his capture by the Germans? How about the agent of fear and horror Stalin unleashed upon his own people in the form of Lavrentiy Beria? How the self-loathing shared by both Hitler and Stalin caused by their possible or likely Jewish heritage. Yes ... afterall in the Georgian language "shvili" means son of, or son. "Djuda" or "Djuga" means Jew. Before and after WWII, Stalin encouraged or turned a blind eye to pogroms in the USSR.Second in terms of human slaughter, perhaps only to Mao Zedong, Josef Stalin (killed 40 million to 62 million souls) was a human monster. This book comes nowhere near to conveying the true nature of Stalin.

Joseph Stalin was just taught to me as a third figure of the "Big Three" in WWII history. Also about his part in helping create the USSR and heating up the Cold War. This book was very informative and interesting. It has given me an itch to scratch and delve more into the life and mind of Joseph Stalin.
Very good read. Not enough mentioned about Stalin's life between WW 2 and his death in the early 50's. Other than that, this short review of Stalin was very accurate.
When reading a biography, one hopes that the writing will be balanced, taking in the good with the bad. While a man like Joseph Stalin admittedly had a huge impact on Russia and deserves to be studied, this book by Hourly History falls short of the middle ground.
For instance, the author does note that Stalin was instrumental in increasing the industrial output of the Soviet Union at the cost of hundreds of thousands of citizens. However, the Soviet Archives document almost 800,000 executions between 1921-1953, and millions of deaths in the Gulag. The book talks about Stalin’s edict of pooling resources and farmlands to benefit communism, but neglects to speak on the resulting 1932-33 famine, with an estimated 6-10 million deaths. The book talks more about Stalin’s success at creating a superpower but glosses over or omits the negatives. Stalin’s efforts to increase the power of the Soviet Union after World War Two isn’t even mentioned.
Don’t get me wrong. I would feel the same if the book focused on Stalin’s excesses and consistently labeled him as a murderous tyrant. All I am asking for is balance, which is not present in this book. One saving grace is that what is included is factual and supported by other sources. Usually Hourly History books give a good overview and readers can search elsewhere for more information. This time around, readers will need to read other offerings just to achieve a balanced knowledge. Three stars.
This book provides an overall glimpse into the world leader that began as a political terrorist of sorts and as his positions grew in the party so too did his thirst for carnage and self aggrandizement.
The writers did a spectacular job providing us with a gripping briefing on one of the greatest mass murderers the world has ever known.
As a planned 'hour's read' - I guess that it hits the mark, but there are lots of holes on the coverage of a life 'from beginning to end'.
There's little information as to his effect on Russia after the war, and no reason given for his death.
It needed input from an editor - The chronology is sometimes a challenge to follow and there's some careless mistakes like" 'The Five Rear Plan' (for Year Plan) and Britain as 'Brittan' ....
I found the story of Iosif Dzhugashvili to be interesting but sanitized. Essentially, this is the story of a ruthless man who grew up poor and had skill organizing labor union strikes. He met Lenin in prison and later became a leader in the Communist Party of Russia. He eliminated opponents and perceived opponents. Some people Russia still love him today. The book did if pretty decent job of describing his life in 37 pages. I see this book is more of an outline of the dictator's life, if one wants to know more they need to read another book with more information.
For some reason this book seems to leave things out only to mention them later as if the reader knows about them. An example is Stalin's withered arm, which is never mentioned until he is rejected by the army, only to reveal bitterness about his childhood with the disability. Another vast shortcoming of the book is to stop short at the end of world war 2, ending with a three paragraph chapter that merely notes he died in 1953 without revealing the pogroms of his post war madness. Seriously flawed.
