"And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth." Genesis 911 The Earth burns. Nick and Beth survive, but few others do. Were they just in the right place at the right time, to live, to pass what they have learned to their offspring, or is there an even deeper reason? Is it God's or Nature's plan? Others survive and a clan developes. Ancient skills are revived, few have the knowledge needed. "It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change." Charles Darwin

The concept behind this book was interesting and not something I had read before. The writing is decent, an editor would have made it better though. I wish there was a bit more confrontation or plot. There's just a lot of walking and gathering and walking and gathering and repeat. However, the author does do a good job in filling the walking with meaningful thoughts/conversations about the future of earth. It's a good read for someone who's looking for a philosophical story. However, the formatting towards the last 25% of the book becomes messed up. Be prepared for constant font changes.Product details

The Second Intelligent Species The Cyclical Earth Dale Langlois 9781481052719 Books Reviews
This is one of those stories that will stick with you awhile, maybe because much of it seems plausible. I liked the simple yet thorough take on The End. I also enjoyed the main character and hope there will be another book--although based on the epilogue it doesn't seem likely!
I read quite a lot and this book stands out in my memory. This isn't your usual survival story - it is a grim situation and I am not talking about zombies. Not only are most people wiped out but also almost all supplies, including almost all wildlife. These are real people who try to keep going. Really good book.
The plot was a bit too repetitive after the opening (which I did love, well done), but yeah too much (of the same) foraging and not enough plot. And then the ending just got predictable, and then predictable. A few characters were unbelievable towards the end hence the prior sentence. I read it 3/4s through but then skimmed. But the author does know his fauna and the techniques. But do I smell a sequel ?
This is truly an excellent post-Apocalyptic book, and I highly recommend it! It will be great should the author decide to do a follow-up to this story.
I found the book to be well written for the most part. There were a few grammatical gaffes long the way, but not enough to be distracting. The characters are well developed, and the storyline is captivating.
As was said in a famous movie Life prevails.
i thoroughly enjoyed reading this debut novel by Dale Langlois. It gave me pause to realize that the premise is not only probable but very possible. As we journey with the characters' struggle for survival after an extinction level event, we are challenged not to take our current existence for granted. I highly recommend this book. I hope there will be more to come.
What I really enjoyed about this book was the author's amazing ability to engulf his readers in the truly claustrophobic atmosphere of a dark world that is post-apocalyptic. I really felt like I was there, suffering along with the characters, and I have seen that same quality in authors like Dostoevsky and Gunter Grass. Very powerful to draw your reader in to that degree. Though I am not well-schooled in science fiction, this appears to me to be an original approach and certainly was a page-turner…!! I found that I did care about the characters, and that's important to me. I look forward to more from this talented author..!
After reading a lot of the other reviews I have to say a few things. I loved this book! It was a fantastic debut for this author. I am a Christian and I didn't find this book vulgar or violent. The story is well told and informative without being too science like or too religious. A nice balance of both. I found the characters were very personable. Ordinary people doing what they have to do to survive. I found the plot original-nice to read a post apocalyptic book not about zombies. It was definitely a page turner from start to finish. Had me on the edge of my seat until the last page. The ending was very interesting. All in all job well done. Hope to see more from this author.
